Our History

metropolitan baptist church

On Monday evening, June 23, 1969, a group of thirteen people met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Edwards to discuss the possibility of beginning on the northside of Atlanta, a church that would stand without apology for the historic Biblical faith. It was determined that services would begin the following Sunday if a suitable meeting place could be obtained. The members of this organizing meeting were: Mr. and Mrs. Ken Edwards; Rev. Bob and Jane Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stephenson, Dr. and Mrs. Tom Hicks, Mr. Walter Trail, Mr. Brown; Mrs. Lafayette Davis; Mrs. Hallie Rippy and Mrs. Evelyn Hurst. Dr. Bob Spencer was called as Pastor and served in this capacity from June of 1969 until March of 1986.

The prayer that evening was if this is in the Lord's Will for the group gathered to start an independent, fundamental Baptist church that we would find a place to meet the following Sunday. Hallie Rippy learned that the Northside Woman's Club could be rented and used immediately!

On Sunday, June 29th, twenty-five people gathered at the Northside Woman's Club for Sunday School. Forty-one were in the morning service and forty in the evening. Soon there was a steady increase in attendance. The kitchen became a nursery and if the babies cried, they were walked to sleep up and down the sidewalk on Paces Ferry Road!

We met in the Woman's Club for about one year then in July 1970 moved to the top floor of a warehouse building on Monroe Drive. Under the leadership of Pastor Bob Spencer the congregation continued to grow.

In 1972, the church had grown to such an extent as to need larger space. We prayed fervently to have a building of our own on the northside of Atlanta. Early in 1973, the property where we are now was purchased and the building plans began to come to life! We moved into the new building at 4795 Peachtree-Dunwoody Road in August 1973. This enabled the church to expand its activities in addition to the weekly Visitation Program already established.

In June of 1987 Dr. Robert Cunningham was called to be the next Pastor of MBC. Under Dr. Cunningham's leadership and preaching, our congregation continue to grow under the Preaching and Teaching of the Word of God! In October 2002, Pastor Cunningham suddenly became ill and was diagnosed November 12th with advanced cancer. He went to be with the Lord on Wednesday,February 5, 2003. It is a comfort to our church family to know that he is with his Savior whom he had loved and served for over 50 years.

Our Assistant Pastor, Pastor Nate Bednar, who had served with Pastor "C" for 12 years, picked up the mantle and kept our grieving congregation together. God is so merciful and kind to give us good men to take responsibility in carrying out the church constitution when the pastorate is vacant. Pastor Nate Bednar became the Interim Feb, 2003 and Senior Pastor of MBC on September 28, 2003.Under Pastor Bednar's leadership we continue to be blessed by good, sound, doctrinal preaching from God's Word.

Continue to pray for this ministry just 2.5 miles inside the perimeter of Atlanta; that God will continue to bless in a great way! We are a ministry committed to the "Great Commission" and on souls being won to the Lord, and families, couples, youth, singles and seniors growing in the nurture and admonition of the Lord! "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting on the right hand of the throne of God" Colossians 3:1
